Unfinished vs. Finished Furniture — Which One's Right for You?

Unfinished vs. Finished Furniture — Which One's Right for You?

If you've been shopping for real wood furniture — like, REAL real wood — you've probably noticed that some pieces come "unfinished" and some come ready to go. And if you're anything like most of our customers, your next thought was probably: "Wait… so do I have to stain this thing myself?"

Fair question. Let's break it down.

What "Unfinished" Actually Means

Unfinished furniture is exactly what it sounds like — a piece built from real wood that hasn't been stained, painted, or sealed yet. It's raw. You can see the grain, feel the texture, and yes, it's basically a blank canvas.

Some people LOVE that. They want to pick the exact color, the exact finish, the exact look — and unfinished gives them that freedom. (And if you live in or around Clearwater, we DO have a non-DIY option that still gives you that freedom without the mess — but more on that later.)

One question we get a lot: "Can I just leave it unfinished?" Technically, yes. But I always tell people the same thing — if you don't put a finish on your furniture, life will finish it for you. The oils from your hands, rings from your morning coffee, a splash of red wine you didn't catch in time… all of that soaks right into raw wood. Over time, your piece ends up with a "finish" you never chose, and trust me, it's not the look you were going for.

So even if you love that raw wood aesthetic, some kind of protective finish is always a good idea. (There are also great options that will keep your piece(s) as close to their "unfinished look" as you can get AND offer protection!)

But here's the part that doesn't always make the brochure: finishing furniture yourself does take some time, space, and a little know-how. You'll need supplies, a well-ventilated area, and enough patience to wait for multiple coats to dry. That said — if you've got the time and the right mindset, it can actually be a really fun and rewarding project. So for anyone who wants an "I did that!" piece in their home, it's a great option. (If you're up for it, we actually wrote a whole guide on it: A Quick and Dirty Furniture Finishing How To.)

The Case for Finished Furniture

Finished furniture shows up ready to use. The stain or paint is already applied, it's sealed and protected, and you can start enjoying it the day it arrives.

The trade-off? You're limited to whatever colors and finishes the manufacturer offers. And if you've ever fallen in love with a dining table but wished it came in a darker walnut instead of honey oak… you know that frustration.

There's also something most people don't think about — with a factory finish, it can be harder to tell exactly what kind of wood you're getting underneath (or if it's even wood at all). With real wood furniture, the grain and character of the wood are part of what makes it special. A finish should enhance that, not hide it.

So Which One Should You Pick?

Here's my honest take: it depends on what matters most to YOU.

Go unfinished if:

  • You enjoy DIY projects and want total control over the final look
  • You have the time, tools, and space to do the finishing yourself
  • You want to see and feel the raw wood before committing to a color

Go finished if:

  • You want something ready to enjoy right away
  • You're not interested in taking on a finishing project
  • You're happy with the available color options

There's Actually a Third Option

Now, here's where it gets good — and this is the part I wish more people knew about.

Many pieces of real wood furniture can be ordered unfinished AND professionally finished to YOUR exact specifications. That means you're not stuck choosing between a factory finish you don't love and a DIY project you don't have time for.

At Barewood, we offer custom finishing on many of the pieces we carry. You pick the piece. You pick the color. We handle the rest — and you get furniture that looks exactly the way you imagined it.

We're talking way more finishes than you'd expect. Want a deep espresso stain on an oak dining table? Done. A weathered gray on a bedroom set? We can do that. It's one of the best parts of shopping for real wood furniture — making it truly yours without having to break out the sandpaper.

The Bottom Line on Unfinished vs. Finished Furniture

Whether you go unfinished, finished, or somewhere in between, the most important thing is that you're buying real wood furniture that's built to last. That's what we're all about here at Barewood — helping you find pieces you'll love for years, finished exactly the way you want them.
