If you've shopped for real wood furniture in Florida, somebody has warned you about the humidity. A salesperson, a relative, a forum post from 2009. The warning is always the same — wood and Florida don't mix, it'll warp, it'll swell, you'll regret it.
Here's the thing. I've been selling this furniture for six years now, and the problems that warning predicts — the warped tabletop, the door that stops closing, the drawer that swells shut in August — come up far less than you'd expect. Rare enough that I've never treated it as a real risk of buying wood furniture down here.
So either we've gotten lucky… or the warning is aimed at something other than what actually causes the trouble.
I think it's mostly the second one.
Real wood does trade moisture with the air around it. It always has. It takes some on when the air is damp, releases it when the air is dry, and it swells and shrinks accordingly. Kiln drying doesn't end that. Neither does finish — more on that in a minute.
And wood moves ACROSS the grain, not along its length. A tabletop gets a little wider in a damp stretch. It doesn't get longer.
So the horror stories are real. Cupped tabletops exist. Split panels exist. I've just come to think that when they happen, the weather outside gets blamed for something else's work.
Here's the mechanism, and once you see it you can't unsee it.
Wood damage — the actual damage, the cupping and warping and splitting — comes from uneven exposure. Not from humidity itself. It happens when one part of a piece is exchanging moisture at a very different rate than another part.

The classic version is a tabletop finished beautifully on top and left bare underneath. Now you've got one face sealed and one face wide open. They breathe at completely different speeds, the wood pulls against itself, and the top cups.
That's not a humidity problem. That's a finishing problem that humidity happens to expose.
So we seal both faces. Top and underside, every table that goes out of here — the finishing we do in-house, and it's what I look for in the lines we bring in. Not because the underside is pretty. Because a tabletop with one bare face is a tabletop waiting to cup.
(Not every surface on every piece, to be clear. The back of a bookcase isn't a wide slab under tension the way a tabletop is. Different part, different risk.)
This is the part that surprises people, so stay with me.
What wood reacts to isn't the humidity level. It's the SWING. Wood that lives at a steady moisture content is stable, whether that's a little damp or a little dry.

Now think about what your house actually does. The AC runs most of the year here, and air conditioning dehumidifies as a side effect of doing its job. Your indoor air sits in a fairly narrow band, month after month, year after year.
Then picture a house up north. Winter heat runs and the indoor air goes desert-dry. Summer rolls in and it goes muggy. That's a real swing, twice a year, every year.
Which one sounds harder on a dining table? Your conditioned Florida house is, weirdly, one of the more stable environments a piece of wood furniture can live in.
Every problem I'd genuinely worry about in this climate has the same thing in common: the furniture wasn't in a conditioned space.
The closed-up house. If you head north for the summer and shut the AC off — or set it to 85 and call it good — you've left everything you own in a warm, damp box for four months. This is the one. If I'm worried about anybody's furniture, it's this. Leave it conditioned, or run a dehumidifier.

The garage. Not storage. I know it's tempting mid-move. Please don't. At least not for long.
The unconditioned storage unit off the highway. Same answer, and it's usually months longer than anybody planned.
The lanai. A screened porch is outdoors. Beautiful, but outdoors — rain blows in and the air is whatever the air is. Worth knowing: pieces meant to live outside get a completely different sealing product than anything we finish for indoor use. So don't assume an indoor piece is lanai-ready just because it's under a roof. It isn't the same product doing the work.
Fair question, and the honest answer isn't the one you'd expect from somebody who sells real wood for a living.
In ordinary indoor humidity, engineered panels are actually pretty stable. They don't do that seasonal widening at all. If holding still were the only thing that mattered, they'd win outright.

Here's where it turns.
Real wood swells, shrinks, and swells back. It's a cycle. It's reversible.
MDF and particle board, when they take on actual liquid water — a leak, a sweating glass, a mop against a toe kick, a summer in that garage we just talked about — swell at the fibers and stay swollen. That puffed-up edge doesn't come back down. Not with time, not with a fan, not ever.
So: real wood moves and returns. Engineered panels mostly hold still, right up until the day they don't — and then it's permanent.
And yes, a chip matters. That veneer or laminate skin is the only thing keeping moisture off the core, so once it's broken, the door is open.
A small chip in a dry, conditioned room isn't an emergency on its own. It's a chip PLUS water that does the damage — which is exactly why it shows up in such predictable places. The bottom edge of a cabinet. A toe kick that's been mopped against. The corner nearest the dishwasher. Water pools low, and low edges are where that skin is thinnest and most likely already lifting.
If you find one, seal it. Clear finish, a bit of edge banding, whatever matches. Just know what you're doing: you're closing the door again, not repairing anything. What's already swollen stays swollen…

In an air-conditioned house? Not really. Buy the wood furniture.
